Information about the Depository Collections

The William M. Rains Library, located in the 34th U.S. Congressional District, is a designated depository for Federal and California State information. Depository publications are cataloged and accessed through the Library's online catalog, LUCY.

Library Access
Access to government information is available during regular library hours.    Members of the public may use Depository materials.  For access to The Collection, patrons are requested to sign the visitors log and to present a driver's license or other state identification card, and to specify the publications or information needed.  Assistance in locating and retrieving documents is available from the Library's Reference and Public Service Desks.

Federal Depository
The Library has been a selective Federal depository since 1979, receiving approximately 9% of the documents available through the Federal Depository Library Program, in a variety of formats.  The Library selects primarily legislative, executive and congressional information, and publications from the Internal Revenue, the Judiciary, Justice, Labor, State and Treasury Departments.  Documents received in paper format are located in the Rains Basement, shelved by SUDOC number.  Documents received in microfiche,  microfilm, audio, video and electronic formats are located in the Library's Media Center.

California State Depository
California State publications received on depository are pre-selected and distributed by the State Printer.  Most California State documents in paper format are located in the Library's main collection, shelved by LC number.

Microforms & Media Resources
Government information received in microfiche, microfilm, audio and video formats are located in the Library's Media Center, stored in cabinets.  All documents on video and audio cassettes can be accessed in the Media Center's  A/V study rooms which provides an integrated audio-visual system for viewing.  Three Minolta reader-printers are available for accessing documents on microfiche and film.

Government Information via the Internet.
Government information received in electronic formats are accessed through two dedicated computer workstations in the Media Center. The Media Center's computer workstations provide access to selected official depository and commercial online websites and to CD/DVD databases. Links to electronic versions of government publications and selected government websites are also available through the library's online catalog, LUCY.

In addition, The DOCUMENTS SPOTLIGHT column, which features newly acquired U.S. and California state documents, is also linked from the Library's online newsletter bRAINStorms.
